Supporting Your Teen Through Peer Conflicts This School Year
As backpacks are packed and school doors swing open, back-to-school season brings a mix of excitement, nerves, and new beginnings. For many teens, returning to school also means navigating complex social dynamics—including the occasional peer conflict. Whether it’s friendship fallouts, group drama, or subtle social tension, these experiences can feel overwhelming and isolating for teens (and stressful for parents watching from the sidelines).
At Thrive Well, we understand that learning to navigate conflict is a key part of adolescent development. But that doesn’t mean your teen has to go it alone. Here are a few ways you can support them with care, patience, and empowerment this school year:
1. Stay curious, not critical. When your teen opens up about a conflict, try to listen without judgment or rushing to solve it. Ask open-ended questions like, "What happened next?" or "How did that make you feel?" to help them process out loud and feel heard.
2. Normalize the discomfort. Peer conflict is a normal (albeit painful) part of growing up. Let your teen know that it’s okay to feel hurt, frustrated, or confused. You can even share a story from your own experience to help them feel less alone.
3. Coach, don’t control. Rather than stepping in to fix the issue, help your teen brainstorm possible responses. Ask what they want to say, how they want to show up, and what outcome they’re hoping for. This builds self-confidence and communication skills.
4. Watch for signs they need more support. Some conflict is typical. But if your teen starts withdrawing, experiencing anxiety around school, or showing major mood shifts, it may be time to loop in a mental health professional. Therapy can offer a neutral space to explore tough emotions and develop coping strategies.
Back-to-school season is a time of growth, socially, emotionally, and mentally. With your steady support and tools from the Thrive Well team, your teen can learn to navigate peer challenges with resilience and self-awareness. If you think your teen could benefit from additional support, our therapists are here and ready to help.
Let’s help them thrive this school year.
